David Van Hulst, now living in Key West, Florida has been drawing and painting since early childhood and has lived, worked and studied to perfect his unique style all over the world. After training at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and School of Visual Arts in New York City, he went on to be an art director and illustrator for international advertising campaigns, children’s books and well known publications in Los Angeles, New York City, London, Amsterdam, Zurich and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. In the early 70’s, while living in London, Van Hulst designed a highly publicized conceptual art happening for the Beatles’ Apple records.
The fine art originals and prints produced by Van Hulst are included in the collections of the famous and infamous from every walk of life. The work seems to be appreciated primarily for the way he so simply captures and expresses the sense of a place that is personal and contemporary, yet timeless. Van Hulst always seeks to convey the “essence” of light in his paintings and in his own words, “light is the key ingredient in my art and color is the tool used to render it. It interests me since color, sound and light are all part of the same spiritual entity, each existing in a different wavelength. The larger meaning of that could keep your mind occupied for a lifetime.” He adds, “What I do is absolutely who I am, when painting I’m lost in a dancing landscape of light and color, completely at peace with all of it...Everyone should be so lucky.”
When you include one of his artworks in your collection, look at it often to be reminded of the special Essence of Key West Light and Color. Become one with the peacefulness existing in this island paradise...for in the freedom of that moment - in the synthesis of you and the light of the art - you are lost in the dance, too!

Susanne Van Hulst was born 1949 in Hungary, lived in Switzerland since age 7 and is now a resident of Key West, Florida. She majored in Graphic Design and photography in college with professional experience working in fashion and journalism. She was employed as a photographer with Philips International in Zurich for 9 years.
Her education in photography continued with courses at the University for Photography in Zurich, Switzerland where she participated in numerous scientific seminars for photography. Later, she participated in workshops for fine, artistic nude photography in Budapest, Hungary. She also taught photography courses in Tuscany and Ticino, in the Italian speaking region of Switzerland.
She first came to the U.S. in 2000 when she visited Las Vegas, San Francisco and Princeton, New Jersey and discovered a love for the American people and the multitude of photogenic landscapes in America. That love brought her back to the U.S in 2001 when she visited South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. With the first extended visit to South Florida, she also discovered an enormous love for Key West. Since moving to Key West in May of 2001 she has been caught up in the never-ending beauty of the tropical island and has chosen to make Key West a permanent home.
Susanne strives to capture the details of a moment in the simple light that most people overlook in the hectic pace of everyday life. Sometimes it may be just a passing cloud or a single flower or even a situation on the street between people, who are interacting. In Key West she has found a virtually endless treasure trove of interesting subjects to photograph. She is also a member of PPA (Professional Photographers of America).
